Conceptual foundations and methodology for the study of active learning and the development of global competencies for the 21st century in higher education: Znanstveno-strokovni priročnik
Synopsis
Higher education teachers who did not listen to pedagogic or didactic courses during their studies may face various obstacles in their teaching practice. Working with students is not easy, especially if it takes place in a hybrid or online format. With the project Designing for increased competence through active participation in higher education (DECAP-HE), we want to improve the quality and efficiency of teaching and learning and the empowerment of individuals and institutions in higher education. In this way, we can actively respond to the challenges of preparing students for work and life in the 21st century.
The manual is intended for both university and post-secondary teachers who want to upgrade and improve their pedagogical and didactic skills and competencies. Presented are modern didactic principles, approaches, strategies, and methods of teaching and providing support for student learning, based and verified on the knowledge of the science of learning in higher education.
The emphasis is on the development of global competencies for the 21st century, which include empowering students for the digital transformation of society, innovative solutions, and the promotion of critical and reflective questions about global problems, the development of intercultural understanding, sustainable development and creation for the common good around the world. Higher education institutions play an extremely important role in this process.
The manual presents the Instrument for observing active learning and developing global competencies in higher education, with guidelines for observation and reflective interviewing. Observational practice among fellow teachers can be an extremely powerful tool for the teacher as well as for the observers. Through a reflective interview, he/she gets a deeper insight into his/hers teaching practice, which helps him/her improve his/hers work.
Improvements must start with us, the teachers, because only in this way will we be able to raise the level of the system itself.
"The quality of the education system is only as good as the quality of the teachers." - UNESCO, Teaching and Learning: Achieving Quality for All, 2014, p. 233.
